Summary

Plants have an impressive array of defense tactics to protect themselves from predators of all shapes and sizes--including humans。 Stephen Gundry believes that these defense strategies make the seemingly virtuous plants that we consume every day--fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds--far less "good for us" than we assume。

Dr。 Gundry outlines the health hazards posed by lectins。 The main sources of lectins in the American diet include conventionally-raised dairy products, beans, and other legumes, wheat and grains, and specific vegetables and fruits

With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each; a step-by-step detox and eating plan; and easy lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in your salad bowl—and shows you how to eat whole foods in a whole new way。

Superficial and inconsistent through out。 Many foods, e。g。 fruits, lentils, are not okay in one section and then allowed in another without good explanations。 More troubling is the author says better to buy Fair Trade and organic foods while none of the brands mentioned in the book are truly fair trade。 Some are seemingly so with self claims but not actually certified fair trade。 Two stars for some useful recipes。

I bought this book at an independent book store rather than go through social media sources who quite often spruik the latest fad and then pester you with a constant stream of emails to buy their program or additional products。 Reading the introduction was refreshing as Dr Gundy explained that poor health or weight gain was “not your fault”。 I particularly liked that this book is fully annotated with a comprehensive bibliography to support his points, should i wish to follow the research papers I bought this book at an independent book store rather than go through social media sources who quite often spruik the latest fad and then pester you with a constant stream of emails to buy their program or additional products。 Reading the introduction was refreshing as Dr Gundy explained that poor health or weight gain was “not your fault”。 I particularly liked that this book is fully annotated with a comprehensive bibliography to support his points, should i wish to follow the research papers more closely。 Drilling it down the book is divided into 3 parts: the why, the how, and the practice。 What I found disappointing and this is why i took a star off my rating, is the pitch is to a US audience, from the common names of food items being different, meaning regular trips through google to understand what he was talking about, to the weights and measurements not being metric。 I was saddened to hear his reports of farming practices in America, like cattle feed lots and battery hens being prevalent, when he uses examples of European produced food being less dangerous。 Growing up in rural Australia access to free ranging cattle products and recent animal cruelty practices ensuring fewer battery hens, would put paid to part of his program…or would it? Also good food lists at the end refer to wild animals and plants in the northern hemisphere and as such, does not include Australian animals and plants which might also be appropriate。 He does say however, that one must use whats available locally and in season so one might assume bush plums, kangaroo meat and other hunter gatherer Aussie foods could be applied。 Unlike other “diets” that ban foods, and has calorie counting as the basis, this program seems to be more relaxed and easier to stick to。 I consider his reasoning to be well documented and possibly the answer to my own health issues but will check with my trusted doctor before starting on this regime。 Time will tell if it IS my fault for putting faith in this simple program or not。 。。。more

The Plant Paradox discusses how lectins (small amounts of poison that plants make to deter consumption from mainly insects) contribute to poor health and weight gain。 By no means are plants bad for you, and you need them to be heathy (hence the paradox)。 Overall this book taught me a lot about lectins, but I do not think I will be changing my diet on the whole as Dr。 Gundry recommends。 Some of his studies are outdated, and conducted only on cells instead of human bodies。 There is merit to what h The Plant Paradox discusses how lectins (small amounts of poison that plants make to deter consumption from mainly insects) contribute to poor health and weight gain。 By no means are plants bad for you, and you need them to be heathy (hence the paradox)。 Overall this book taught me a lot about lectins, but I do not think I will be changing my diet on the whole as Dr。 Gundry recommends。 Some of his studies are outdated, and conducted only on cells instead of human bodies。 There is merit to what he is saying, and in some of the tests he does on lectin sensitive individuals。 After reading this book, I am more likely to eat more greens, and produce that does not contain as much sugar or lectins。 I am also more likely to consume more organic, grass-fed dairy, and pasture raised eggs。 。。。more

This started off strong, with some interesting hypotheses, but then it kind of went off the rails。 This book had far leas science than I was hoping for, and jumped to some pretty shaky conclusions (we shouldn't eat potatoes and tomatoes because "no one had eaten them prior to Columbus"), then spent the last third selling a diet plan and supplements。 Plus the audiobook narrator sounded like a robot。 Just not a fun read。 This started off strong, with some interesting hypotheses, but then it kind of went off the rails。 This book had far leas science than I was hoping for, and jumped to some pretty shaky conclusions (we shouldn't eat potatoes and tomatoes because "no one had eaten them prior to Columbus"), then spent the last third selling a diet plan and supplements。 Plus the audiobook narrator sounded like a robot。 Just not a fun read。 。。。more

This book is overwhelming but necessary。 I think we are so oblivious to what we put in out bodies, completely unaware of how we are hurting ourselves without even knowing it。 I loved towards the end how he shares several methods used to cook foods in other countries that have kept them safe and healthy。 Our food culture in the USA sadly seems to be more about profit and excess rather than health and quality。 Of course, I’m not assuming that everyone can or even should strictly adhere to this spe This book is overwhelming but necessary。 I think we are so oblivious to what we put in out bodies, completely unaware of how we are hurting ourselves without even knowing it。 I loved towards the end how he shares several methods used to cook foods in other countries that have kept them safe and healthy。 Our food culture in the USA sadly seems to be more about profit and excess rather than health and quality。 Of course, I’m not assuming that everyone can or even should strictly adhere to this specific diet。 But this is definitely worth the read to open your eyes to all the ways food can help and hurt us!!! 。。。more

He definitely has a bit of self promotion in parts of this book。 With that being said, he explains complex concepts, and makes a case for giving up lectins。 Now for me to give it a try and see if this works to aleviate some of my issues。

More like 2。75 stars。 I'm still not sure about this book。 I picked it up because I thought it was more of a discussion/history/science/nutrition kind of book。 Instead, it was yet another "My DiEt Is ThE bEsT" kind of a book。 Some of the science was interesting (I've read a lot of nutrition books in the last few years but none of them really went into lectins), and some of the historical perspectives make a lot of sense (that Europeans didn't eat certain foods until they were brought over from th More like 2。75 stars。 I'm still not sure about this book。 I picked it up because I thought it was more of a discussion/history/science/nutrition kind of book。 Instead, it was yet another "My DiEt Is ThE bEsT" kind of a book。 Some of the science was interesting (I've read a lot of nutrition books in the last few years but none of them really went into lectins), and some of the historical perspectives make a lot of sense (that Europeans didn't eat certain foods until they were brought over from the Americas by colonizers, so our bodies aren't, evolution-wise, used to breaking down certain lectins in the food)。 But those meal plans at the end are basically starvation diets。 。。。more

The book contains numerous inaccuracies and embellishments。 While some of the information presented may have a basis in truth, much of it is erroneous。 The author fails to provide credible sources for many of their claims, and the references that are provided often fail to substantiate their statements。 Furthermore, the studies cited are frequently misrepresented in order to appear as though they support the author's assertions, when in reality they do not。 The book contains numerous inaccuracies and embellishments。 While some of the information presented may have a basis in truth, much of it is erroneous。 The author fails to provide credible sources for many of their claims, and the references that are provided often fail to substantiate their statements。 Furthermore, the studies cited are frequently misrepresented in order to appear as though they support the author's assertions, when in reality they do not。 。。。more

This is too depressing to continue as I am supposed to give up my favorite things in order to follow this advice。 It requires giving up meat and all fruit except for mangoes and two other tropical fruits which are about impossible to get。 Part of his advice I have already read and you probably have too if you read these types of books。

Doctor Gundry is a very informative expert。 I have used a number of his products。 This was the first time I have ever read one of his books。 The book is jam-packed with knowledge and new revelations。 While there were many things I knew, I learned things in this book that I have never heard before in my life。 It’s a game-changer。 There was a lot of content that seemed repetitive。 But, I also found myself listening to parts of the chapters over again。

While some of the science was interesting, a lot of the information can lead readers to eating disorders and down the alt-right pipeline, using harmful tips and anti-intellectualism conspiracy theories。

I found the book extremely fascinating and well written; I couldn’t put it down。 Dr。 Gundry explains everything extremely well and goes through the trouble of laying out everything that has led up to where we all are today。 He discusses the science of why you should avoid certain foods and ties it into many existing diets and trends。 He often circles back to something he previously discussed if it relates to something new he’s explaining。 There’s a little low key humor he throws in throughout fo I found the book extremely fascinating and well written; I couldn’t put it down。 Dr。 Gundry explains everything extremely well and goes through the trouble of laying out everything that has led up to where we all are today。 He discusses the science of why you should avoid certain foods and ties it into many existing diets and trends。 He often circles back to something he previously discussed if it relates to something new he’s explaining。 There’s a little low key humor he throws in throughout for giggles。I find it comical that some folks have rated the book poorly simply because they are unwilling to try the protocol。Many people may want to skip right to the protocol, but I highly suggest you read the book in its entirety。 It will motivate you to maintain the diet, understanding the mechanisms behind everything。 。。。more
